Jamie Frost

Enjoy discovering the fascinating art of portrait sculpture in this three day course. During the weekend you will produce a life-size head from quality hand building clay. Your tutor is an award-winning portrait sculptor who has exhibited several times with the Society of Portrait Sculptors in London.

You’ll start by making small studies, discovering the underlying structure of the head and learning how to handle the clay. You’ll soon be working on a life-size sculpture of the head on a sculptor’s armature. Tuition will be given on each facial element and, perhaps more importantly, how the shaping and expressive quality of each feature affects the other aspects of the portrait. A human head is not a series of separate eyes, ears etc and the teaching reflects this.

As we consider details and character, raising an eyebrow or the line of a mouth will dramatically change the mood of the piece. I’ll introduce you to the work of many other sculptors and talk you through the different approaches taken in my own work. The final day includes a session preparing the sculpture for firing into ceramic.

This masterclass includes a choice of lunches, refreshments and all tools and materials.

Portrait sculpture is a really pure process. There’s no design or composition to consider, it’s a focus on one person’s character. Making a head is a fairly swift process but making a portrait involves small adjustments and subtle modelling to capture the mood and personality of your subject.

The fee for the three day course is £400 per participant, including all tools, materials and lunches.

Next course is 31st October- 2nd November 2024
